In a recent radio interview, a famous athlete
remarked that he didn't 'believe' in Sports Psychologists. How can someone who hasn't played at the highest
level know how to work in the world of athletics?
A very interesting thought, but best answered with another question - How can a doctor know how to mend a footballer's broken leg, when that doctor has never played professional football?
The simple answer is, of course, that the doctor knows how to mend broken legs because that is what he or she does. Similarly, a psychologist knows how to help affect behaviour and experience - regardless of the person or situation.
The English cricket team has made immense progress over the last few years, however it seems that the bigger the occasion - the bigger the potential humiliation. Why? Because the other teams are better? Being better is not a good enough excuse. It should beg the question What can I do to get better and be better than them?
The English cricket team will often try a day on the golf course to improve their game. Athletes will sometimes try illegal drugs. Football managers will sometimes enlist spiritualists. It has never ceased to amaze the authors of this site why hypnosis is left out of sports training and coaching programmes, or sometimes added as a psychological adjunct or afterthought, and simply labelled 'visualisation.'
The only reason that hypnosis is left out of mainstream sports coaching is that people fear it is disempowering or represents a loss of control.
This couldn't be further from the truth. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state of mind. We all use it everyday and when used for therapeutic or personal performance enhancement purposes, it is an immensely powerful tool for change. It is empowering and is a skill any sportsperson can learn.
